Verbs: ‘ing forms

There are of course many ways to use verbs. This post is just another way or two to to use the ‘ing form.

 

 

after prepositions the verb needs to be ‘ing

 

On opening the window, I was able to see and smell the luscious green countryside for the first time in a while.

On discovering that the CEO was coming, everyone cleaned the office.

On receiving the go ahead, the engineers moved in and made preparations for the new build.

 

we use ‘ing verbs when the subject is an activity

 

Smoking is bad for your health.

Eating healthily is necessary for good health.

Trying something new now and again helps us develop on both a personal and professional level.

 

‘ing verbs can be used provide additional information

 

 

She left the pitch walking.

They took classes willingly.

We met each other running a marathon.

 

Also try to remember common examples of verbs that are followed by ‘ing verbs:

admitted

The suspects eventually admitted taking the bench from the house. 

enjoy

More and more Chinese students enjoy learning English. 

finished

When you finished working and left, did you remember to lock the door?

mind

Would you mind trying to think of other people when you want to get drunk.

suggested

The hospital suggested drinking 1.5 litres of water every morning when I wake up.

 

sometimes we us ‘ing when it is not a verb 🙂
