Reflexive pronouns

These end in elf (singular) or selves (plural) and are used when the subject and object are both the same. These pronouns include myself, yourself, ourselves etc

I like to practise English by myself.

We went by ourselves.

Do you cook for yourself?

How a reflexive pronoun changes the meaning of a sentence.

He is teaching him English (not reflexive: ‘him’ is another person)

He is teaching himself English (reflexive: ‘himself’ is the same person)

In the lockdown, my hair will be be cut (non reflexive: the hair will be cut by a another person )

In the lockdown, I will cut my hair myself (reflexive: the person talking will cut their hair)

They will cook for themselves (they and the people who cook are the same)

They will cook for each other (they will cook for different people)

She will do it herself. (reflexive: she and herself are the same person)

Someone will do it for her. (non reflexive: Someone and her are different people)

Help yourself! (reflexive)

Get someone to help you! (non reflexive)

It will take care of itself (reflexive)

Someone/something will help it (non reflexive)

oneself

Oneself indicates that the object of the verb is the same as the subject.

One has to take care of oneself when going out.

Oneself is more formal than himself or herself and is gender neutral. You can use this to sound profound:

Oneself is taking care.

Oneself is very busy.

Oneself is not feeling well.

_____

What do you do yourself?

What does oneself do?

What did they do themselves?

What other examples can you think of?
