When we refer to some activities in expressions, it is only possible to certain verb combinations before them. The good news is that it is not always necessary to remember the expression as there are some rules that can help us.

 

we use ‘go to’ with places and events

 

 

Harry and Philip go to the gym three times a week

Susan asked Andrew if he would like to go to the gym

In the UK, people now can go to a chip shop and eat vegan fish and chips! 

 

we use ‘do’ with activities you do in a gym

 

 

People are complaining that they are shocked as it now costs £10 to do one hour of Pilates.

I don’t like to do weights anymore as my shoulder hurts.

Do judo they said, so she did.

 

we can use ‘go’ with activities that end ‘ing

 

 

Many people go skiing in Switzerland in January, it is a fantastic time to go.

Why did you go swimming when you should have been learning English?

we use ‘play’ with games and words that end with ball 

 

 

Saturday is a good day to play football.

I always get angry when I play Monopoly.
