Article use: THE and A/AN

We use THE when there in only one of something

 

 

Rungradi is THE largest football stadium in the world.

THE universe is so far only 4% explored.

THE capital of Wales is Cardiff.

 

We use A/AN to explain what kind of thing something is

 

A tomato is actually a fruit rather than a vegetable.

Silicone is A polymer made up of siloxane.

Yoga is A form of physical and mental exercises.

 

We use THE to talk about locations in a place 

 

 

This weekend we went to THE cinema and ate loads of popcorn.

They invited us to THE park and I think we should go.

THE supermarket shelves are empty!

 

AN does not just precede vowels at the beginning of words 

Whilst AN generally does precede words that begin vowels, it is more accurate to say that AN precedes vowel sounds.

It will take AN six hours to arrive at her house.

She always said that it was AN honour to receive THE award. 

A prince is normally AN heir to a throne.

 

A does not just precede consonants at the beginning of words

There are exceptions of when we use A too

 

 

Rome is A European city located in Italy.. 

All sites have A URL.

It is amazing how many people see A unicorn after drinking a lot.
