THE: when and not to use

When we first talk about something, we use ‘a’

 

I am going to see a film.

Go shopping, have fun and buy a pen.

There is a person walking up and down the street outside my house.

 

 

After the first time, we say the, becuase the listener knows which thing we are talking about

 

Before: I am going to see a film. After: Have you seen the film, it was pretty good.

Before: … buy a pen. After: How much did you pay for the pen?

Before: ..a person walking up and own the street. After: … the person has gone now!

 

We use the when we are thinking about one particular thing

 

Can you close the door please?

She got the job!   

The motorbike needs a service

 

 

We use the when the situation, person or thing is clear

 

He is going to the bank, but he will be back soon.

He asked me if I wanted to go go to the cinema.

The [doctor’s] surgery will open at 9am tomorrow.

 

We dont use the with names

 

Ireland has become a popular destination for English learners.

Mount Snowdon is the highest mountain in England and Wales.

Fred has decided to adopt a dog.

 

 

We do use the with Republic, Kingdom and States

 

The United KIngdom has become increasingly expenisive as a place to study.

The Republic of Ireland is in the EU.

The US use different words in English to the UK but are easiuly understood.

 

The is not normally used with place or building names where the first word is the name of a person or place

 

London Zoo is at Regents Park.

Buckingham Palce is one of the Queen’s residences.

Victoria Station has many restaurants both inside and utside the station if you are hungry when you arrive.

 

But there are names that have the

 

The Bank of England are responsible for changing interst rates.

The Great Wall of China is quite a site.  

The Tower of London is near Tower Bridge.
