Preposition use with adjectives

Prepositions change from language to language. Rather than have a general rule or pattern to follow, we often have to remember what they follow. Here we focus on the adjectives that they can  follow.

 

 

Adjectives followed by OF

At this time, we are unaware of any adverse situation.

We are fond of each other.

I would not be proud of having to breaking a window playing football.

Some people are full of nonsense. I can’t understand the reason why some people don’t trust anyone.

 

Adjectives followed by BY

After lockdown, everyone was surprised by the number of businesses that had closed down.

Companies are often impressed by staff who are willing to work for free during a trial period.

She was ‘blown away’ by all the support from everybody. [phrasal verb – pleasantly surprised]

The police were shocked by the number of people that were at the illegal rave.

It is easy to get depressed by the amount of pollution that can be seen in the sea.

 

 

Adjectives followed by AT

The team are pleased at the way the product launch went.

These days the team are terrible at scoring goals.

We did say that we were good at organising parties.

They are angry at him for doing something very stupid.

 

Adjectives followed by TO

Often doctors are inclined to not prescribe medication and see if the pain goes away with gentle exercise.

They have said many times that they are driven to provide the best customer service on the market.

The Local Authority are opposed to anyone building anything near the mountain as it will spoil the view.

Sometimes supermarkets are open to the idea of having promotions where people can get free samples.

 

 

Adjectives followed by IN

You said that you were always interested in hearing more about learning English.

On the whole, I was disappointed in how they behaved in class.

The NGO are involved in looking at how people’s behaviour patterns start in childhood.

Anyone skilled in nuclear physics should perhaps consider applying for the new job advertised in London.
